About SHCCC
Our History

Sacred Heart Canossian College of Commerce (SHCCC) is a non-profit-making post-secondary educational institution registered under the Education Ordinance (Cap 279) and run by the Daughters of Charity of the Canossian Institute, Inc (also known as “Canossian Missions”).

As one of the first religious institutes that pioneered Catholic education in Hong Kong in 1860, the Canossian Sisters propose Gospel values that promote women’s awareness of their human and Christian dignity and responsibility.

  • In 1905, Sr Clelia Martinelli, an Italian missionary, founded the College and made its mark in history as the oldest school of commerce in Hong Kong. The first “commercial class” was made up of 25 girls from English, Portuguese, Irish and Chinese families who attended the Italian Convent School. Sr Clelia taught them shorthand, typing and bookkeeping, the secretarial skills needed at that time to support women for a worthwhile career in a male-dominated society. Her vibrant personality did much to enliven the tiny beginnings and to soundly establish the new venture.

  • In 1926, upon departure of Sr Clelia, the class was entrusted to a lay teacher, Miss Florentina Nunes, who efficiently ran the class for nearly 25 years while waiting for another Canossian sister to take over the headship. The ravages of World War II did not deter this zealous lady from pursuing her passion in education, who continued to privately train young women in office skills in her one-room apartment on Caine Road.

  • In 1950, Sr Erminia Castilho, a former student of Miss Nunes, was appointed the Head of the commercial school when immigrants from the mainland began to flock to Hong Kong to set up their business. Sr Erminia alertly identified the increasing demand for trained secretaries. She enriched the curriculum, expanded the classes and improved the teaching and learning facilities. Sr Erminia directed the school for 12 years and was very active in promoting secretarial training.

  • In 1970, the College was formally registered with the Education Department (now called the “Education Bureau”) as ‘Sacred Heart Canossian Convent Commercial School’.

  • In 1991, the College was re-registered and renamed as ‘Sacred Heart Canossian Commercial School’.

  • In 2000, the College launched the first diploma programme in secretarial administration, and was further renamed to ‘Sacred Heart Canossian College of Commerce’ to reflect its upgraded curriculum.

  • In 2004, SHCCC introduced the first cohort of 3-year Professional Diploma programme. Since then, the College has emerged from a vocational school specializing in secretarial training to a sub-degree programme provider offering graduates alternate pathways to work or further study. According to the graduate survey of 2010, 86.3% of SHCCC Professional Diploma graduates were admitted with advanced standing to top-up degree programmes.

  • In 2011, SHCCC successfully went through the Initial Evaluation at QF Level 4 and Programme Validation for Higher Diploma in Business Studies (HDBS) conducted by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). In the years to come, SHCCC will continue to develop quality and market driven Higher Diploma programmes in other disciplines to accommodate students’ diversified needs in the pursuit of their educational and career goals.
